"And in my heart, I vowed loyalty to that brave little girl, that would never bend her will no matter how much she cried or how much it hurt.“
I appreciate that Mr. Kokubu is so honest with his students and admits he doesn’t have all the answers, not does he dismiss their questions. He thought hard and realized, “yeah, I’ve never personally questioned the idea of “you have to do your best” and its something we’re just TOLD from the beginning of our lives.
Then he goes on to say he personally always assumed you put in lots of effort into everything you do for your own sake, and he personally always did it because he WANTED to become a better person.
But DOES putting in effort lead to you always becoming a better person? Or does it sometimes lead to failure and disappointment and becoming bitter? And what if you have no interest in becoming a better person for its own sake or for the sake of others, like Takagi seems to? What’s the point of effort then?
Mr. Kokubu knows these things don’t have easy answers, and he’s not going to pretend they do, or that she should just do what she’s told and it will all work out. So he just tells her what his own experience has led him to believe and allows her to draw her own conclusions. And I think being honest with a student like this, not pretending you know it all because you’re an adult, admitting to them that not all questions and life dillemmas have real answers, is a really good way to approach it.
olaf is the prime example of a genuinely bad character who did a few good deeds in his life and doesnt get redeemed because of it. the baudelaires did not mourn for him. they buried him because to them, they felt thats what they should do. they still hated him. count olafs ending is not an excuse to crown him your “uwu precious angel who was misunderstood.” he is a bad person who had a few good moments. dont romanticize his abuse of the baudelaires just because he carried kit to the island.

I think they buried him because watching a corpse decompose is traumatizing and unhygienic. Plus it would not smell good at all.
Burying him was more their gift to themselves than any commentary on his worth as a character.
